The University of Wyoming is a land-grant university in Laramie, which is the county seat of Albany County, in Wyoming, USA. Laramie was founded in the mid 1860's, and was named after Jacques LaRamie, a French trapper, who seems to have disappeared around 1810, in the Laramie Mountains, and who was never found.
The Wyoming University of Laramie, often referred to as simply UW, traces its roots back in 1886, when the cornerstone of Old Maine was laid, with the inscription "Domi Habuit Unde Disceret", which in English translation would mean "He need not go away from home for instruction". One year later, a class of 42 women and men began their college education at the university.
Since its founding, the university grew, consisting today of 7 different colleges, through which it grants various degrees and majors, such as the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the College of Business.
The athletic teams from the University of Wyoming are known as the Wyoming Cowboys, who compete in the NCAA Division level, including in FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) for football, the university also being a member of the Mountain West Conference.
There are 9 women’s and 8 men's athletic teams at the university, covering sports areas such as: cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and wrestling, being best known for their achievements in basketball, in which they made a total of 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, winning 2 conference title, since 1999, when the Mountain west Conference was formed, as well as an outright championship in 2002.
